When Flashing a new Custom ROM or a factory image of an Official Firmware to your device manually, you will have to wipe data/factory reset your device. That means you will lose everything you have in your device’s internal storage. So, it is recommended that you make a backup of everything you have in your device before you proceed with any kind of development work, even rooting your device. You don’t really have to wipe your device after rooting, but you might have to if something goes wrong, so always be prepared.
