Most of the computers have dedicated buttons, keys or shortcuts to adjust the brightness of the screen. You can find them on the left or right side of the monitor panel.

You must have noticed that after upgrading to or by doing a clean installation of 10 the brightness controls on the or brightness settings in the control panel might stop working.

This might be due to the fact that you have faulty or outdated graphics driver or you haven’t installed graphic driver on your Windows 10 at all.

With default settings in Windows 10 automatically searches, downloads and installs all necessary drivers on your PC so you won’t face any problems however if user have disables automatic in Windows they would have to manually search and install the drivers on regular basis.

3 ways to fix screen brightness adjustment problem in Windows 10

Method 1 of 3

Update graphics driver using Device Manager (method1)

Step 1: By right-clicking on the start open Device Manager.


Step 2: In Device Manager expand Display Adapters in order to see the on board graphics or graphics card installed on your PC.

Step 3: Right-click on the graphic card entry and click Update Driver Software and an installation wizard will pop up.


Step 4: Here click on Search automatically for updated driver software in order for Windows to automatically search and install the latest version of driver available.


NOTE: While the software is being updated the screen may go blank for a couple of seconds.

Step 5:  After the installation is complete reboot your PC once.


 Method 2 of 3

Update video driver using Device Manager (method 2)

Step 1: Open Device Manager by right-clicking on the start menu or searching for it.


Step 2: Expand Display Adapters to the the lost of on board graphic card and drivers installed.

Step 3: Click update graphic card name by right-clicking on the graphic card name.



Step 4: Click browse my computer for driver software.


Step 5: Now click on the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer option.


Step 6: Now click on the name of your graphic card and select next.


You will now see an installation screen appear and the process will begin. Screen might go blank for a couple of second, wait a bit after that you will see a “Windows has successfully updated your driver software” message, click the close button.


The process is now complete and you should be able to adjust the brightness by now.

Method 3 of 3

Manually update driver software to be able to adjust brightness.

Step 1: Download the latest version of the driver from either your graphic card manufacturer’s website or PC’s manufacturer.

NOTE: If you don’t have any idea who is your graphic card manufacturer and what is your graphic card number then you can check it in device manager. Start button > Device manager > Expand Display Adapters to view your graphic card’s name and number. This this doesn’t display the desired information use third-party apps like Speccy.

While downloading the driver make sure that you are downloading the right type of driver as 32-bit driver won’t work on 64-bit driver. Please refer to the Windows you are running and the driver it supports.

Step 2: Double-click on the setup file and follow the on screen procedure.

Step 3: Reboot the system to complete the installation and complete the process.
