Quick Access is a new feature introduced in . Its functionality is to display recently opened files and folders. However Quick Access in the navigation panel of displays only frequently accessed folder not files.

Windows 10 allows users to pin their favorite folders to Quick Access so they don’t have to open it up from the original . Quick Access in the navigation panel will appear even if you configure the File Explorer to open This PC instead of the default Quick Access, you can still use this feature as you can pin your favorite folders to it.

Rename folders pinned to Quick Access in Windows 10

You might want to rename folders pinned to Quick Access to improve privacy but unfortunately that’s not allowed. The Quick Access will show the folder by its original name even if you have created its shortcut and pinned that. If you want to rename folders pinned to Quick Access you need to take help of the Mklink command present in 10.

Guide to rename folders pinned to Quick Access in Windows 10

Following is an example of renaming Downloads folder to My Downloads.

Step 1: Open File Explorer.

Step 2: Go to the folder you want to rename using Quick Access. Hold down the Shift key, right-click on the folder that you want to rename, and then click Copy as path option to save it on the clipboard.

Step 3: Right-click on the start menu and run as admin.

Step 4: In the Command Prompt type the following:

mklink /J <Link> <Target>

Now in <Link> type the path to the new folder shortcut that is being created. In <Target> type the path to the original folder that you want to rename. You can choose any location for the <Link>.

As we are renaming Downloads to My Downloads the command would be:

mklink /J “D:\My Downloads” “D:\Users\Test\Downloads”

*Test is your user name account.

Press Enter to execute the command and when it’s successfully done you will Junction created message. When the above command is executed, it will create a new folder shortcut named My Downloads in the root of Drive D.

Step 5: Now to go the newly created folder, right-click on it and click on Pin to Quick Access to pin the folder on Quick Access.

You can now click on the folder and view its contents as you have successfully renamed the folder.

Step 6: If you desire you can now unpin the original folder from Quick Access.
